Our Story

The story of Fallsbrook Woodworking starts with a walk in the woods…

We have been stewarding 100 acres of Acadian Forest back to its majestic diversity from a devastating partial clearcut in the 1950’s. We’ve learned much from this forest through observation and skilful selective harvest with primary consideration for the natural forest ecosystem. Today stands a mix of older seed trees gracing the canopy over younger generations of sugar maple, beech, yellow birch, ash and white pine.

Our primary goal is to improve the forest through our work, encouraging a mixed species, multi-generational stand. Bird and animal species play an important role in seed distribution and insect control. We do all that we can to create a home for these “woods workers” by leaving dead standing trees, brush, and understory plants to become food and habitat.

The dedication to our forest management strategy has rewarded us with abundant quality wood for building materials, unique boards and lumber for woodworking projects, firewood, maple sap for syrup, and much more. Frequent walks through the trails help us decide which trees we’ll harvest, while creating space and light for younger trees to fill in and grow.

Restoration also has been the approach with depleted pasture and barren steep slopes on our rural property. We realized the soil needed to be stabilized, and planted red pine planted on 10 acres in 1985. As the trees became established and grow, the winter ritual involved hand-pruning dead limbs and lower branches to encourage fewer knots and higher quality wood. That stand is now producing lumber for projects such as our apple bushel boxes as we select out trees to give more space and light to those remaining.

We work with local tradespeople to selectively cut and saw our wood into workable material. Boards are naturally aged both outside and in our wood-fired workshop. After about 24 months, boards are sufficiently seasoned and ready for projects.
